2009 Regional championship
Calvary Baptist Academy boys won both the District 1-2A title and the Region 1-2A titles in less than a week with no track to train on! The "elite eleven" girls also finish as the district runner ups two years in a row. We are proud of our kids! Below is a run down of the Regional championships from the Cavs team perspective.
The Cavs girls placed an astounding fifth place of sixteen teams with only eleven participants. Five of the eleven qualified for the State meet in Baton Rouge to be held next week. Ruby Richie led the girls charge with her powerful running style qualifying in a max four events in the 100m, 200m, 4x400, and 4x200m relay teams. Richie, Rhonda Martin, Avery Watson, and Ashley Haynes had a record breaking performance in the girls 4x200 sailing their way into the top three and earning their place at the big dance!
Martin, Haynes, and Watson were also members of the heart stopping 4x400 m relay team that will revisit the State Champs for the second year in a row.
Kelsey Wildes was the final member of that 4x400 meter team running an amazing split following a long day of the 1600 and 800m runs. Wildes qualified in the 1600m earlier that day. Kalia Wildes scored points in the two mile run and Taylor Johnson scored points in the 110m and 300m hurdles. Sydney McClain, Caroline Tullos, and Shelby Dodson also participated for the girls team.
This young group of girls has potential beyond their years and have put a new meaning to "Small but Mighty!" It was their t-shirts that stated... 11 girls. No track. No problem that gave both teams inspiration for the day.
The boys started off the day STRONG with Jacob Talley scoring second place in the discus and earning his place back down south for his second year in a row. Talley earned the alternate spot in the Javelin finishing fourth while teammate James Michael Miller earned points finishing sixth.
Zac Overstreet found a new gift this year in the pole vault finishing in the top three and earning his place in history as both the first two miler (2007) and the first pole vaulter to qualify for the State meet.
The boys 4x200 and 4x100m teams of Brandon Wilson, Grayson Collins, Miller, and Chris Bates finished fourth in a very talented group of competitors despite running the fastest times they have run all year,
Chase Rolland went head to head with collegiate signee Mark Dodson of Menard and finished a respectable second place in the 1600m run. Teammate John Broughton scored points in the same event finishing fifth with a new best time.
New comer to Calvary, Joshua Lamers placed fourth as an alternate in the 110m hurdles.
Brandon Wilson(who is only a freshman!), brother of former 100m stand out Kendrick Wilson finished second to keep up the family tradition in the 100m dash. Miller earned a hard fought fourth spot in an unbelievable field of speed.
Rolland returned after the mile to finish second behind friendly rival and fresh legged Dez Duron in an incredible battle to the end in the 800m run.
Senior Dylan Brossette who owns the second fastest 800m time in Cav history finished in a heart wrenching fourth spot as he and a competitor collided disrupting his finish and settling for an alternate spot at the Championships.
Hayden Slack slipped in for the third spot in the 300hurdles running a season personal record. Wilson qualified for yet another event in the 200m run while Bates earned points for the team.
Landon Roach hails as the new Cav 2mile king placing third and punching his ticket for the big show next week.
The boys finished the day COURAGEOUS as Junior High runners threw in cushioning points for their older teammates.
Jeremy Taylor and Calvin Moody both eighth graders scored points in the 400m dash and returned to help send the 4x400 m relay team with Slack and Rolland on to the Championships finishing second.
Josh Hudson (7th) grader set a new personal record finishing fifth place in the two mile run. Jared Myatt and Zac Carscadden also participated for the boys teams.
The teams will head down to the LSU track complex in Baton Rouge to try their legs against the State's best Friday May 8th.
